The City of Wheeling will soon host the 2018 Professional Fire Fighters of West Virginia State Convention.
It is a special year to hold the convention in Wheeling, because 2018 marks the Wheeling Fire Department’s 100th year as an International Association of Firefighters charter member.
Wheeling Firefighters Local 12 was actually one of the initial 22 IAFF charter members. There are now more than 5,000.
Local 12 President Tom Haluscak says they are looking forward to hosting firefighters from around the state in downtown Wheeling.
“Along with our 80 to 100 career firefighters throughout the state, a lot of our local members will attend and be out and about for the next three to four days just spending time in downtown. That was a big thing we wanted to do. We wanted to showcase our downtown and make it walkable to all our meetings and dinners. We wanted to show it off,” said Haluscak.
The state convention runs from Wednesday through Saturday.
Meetings will take place at the Capitol Theater, and on Thursday there will be a special service held at the Fallen Firefighter Memorial at Heritage Port at 5:30 p.m..
