There were lots of smiles at West Virginia Northern Community College on Wednesday night as the inaugural class of explorers from the Wheeling Police Department’s Explorer Post number one graduated.
Eleven newly-minted police explorers received certificates during the ceremony. According to Chief Shawn Schwertfeger, not only does the Police Explorer program keep idle teenage and young adult hands busy, but it will benefit the city for years to come.
“Hopefully several, if not all of these young men and women, will develop such an interest in law enforcement that, after their schooling is completed, they want to come and work here,” said Schwertfeger. “They already know us, we know them. It’s a nice fit. It’s an ‘outside-the-box’ thinking related to recruitment effort.”
Chief Schwertfeger adds that he has received positive feedback on this inaugural class. He says that they can now go on to additional training with his department.
