For the first time in it’s 12-year history, the Augusta Levy Learning Center will have a new director.

The Center’s founder and executive director Kathy Shapell recently announced her retirement on Thursday.

Angela Wood, who has been with the Center since 2005, will be taking over that position after the first of the year.

Wood began her career with Augusta Levy as an intern.

She has a Master of Education degree in early intervention with Autism Specialization from the University of Pittsburgh.

Shapell said she thinks Wood is perfectly suited for the job, “She is incredibly talented. She is dedicated. She is able to think outside the box while staying true to our mission.”

“I do have some really big shoes to fill. Kathy has been a wonderful mentor. I just hope to continue and carry on and have the best evidence based practices for our kids and propel us into the future,” Wood said.

Wood says that one of her fist priorities will be to expand the Center’s pre-adolescent program for children from eight to 12-years-old.
