According to statistics provided by the Wheeling-Ohio County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, several multi-day events have attracted thousands of people to the Friendly City over the past few weeks.
Nearly 10,000 people attended annual Cancer Research Classic High School Basketball Showcase at Wheeling Jesuit. It’s estimated that visitors spent more than $1.5 million on things such as hotel rooms, restaurants, retail, and entertainment.
Combine that with other events such as the three day OVAC Wrestling Tournament with teams traveling from as far away as Morgantown and Parkersburg, it’s great news for local businesses, “So that anything we can do to attract additional people to the area as a visitor, as a tourist is the right thing to do. Also for the people that live here, it improves the quality of life. It gives them things to do, exciting things to see or do,” said Wheeling/Ohio County CVB Executive Director Frank O’Brien.
He says events like Beast of the East and Super Six also bring millions of dollars into the local economy. He hopes a major announcement will be coming soon about another big event that may be coming to the Wheeling area.
