The Vigilant Engine Company of the Martins Ferry Fire Department is showing their Purple Rider pride in a big way.
Their new fire truck is purple.
The $491,718.09 Sutphen engine pumper truck even has the Purple Riders’ iconic horseshoe emblem on the back.
“It was the first thing the members decided when we discussed the new truck–the color,” said Lt. Justin Matz.
He says at least 90 percent of the firefighters are Martins Ferry graduates.
He says people’s eyes light up with hometown pride when they see it.
The truck replaces their 1994 engine pumper that they will now sell.
They say the life expectancy of a fire truck in their department is 20-25 years.
The new one has state of the art equipment for extracting trapped accident victims.
“The truck was paid for by a fire grant that the citizens graciously voted for,” said Lt. Matz.
That funding is specifically for this purpose, he noted.
He said the mayor really likes the purple truck.
“He said if he had anything to do with it, they’d all be purple!” said Matz.
