Mega Millions tickets are popular on New Year’s Day

As we begin a new year, many of us have resolved to improve our finances.

So maybe that’s what’s prompting so many people to buy Mega Millions tickets.

And also the fact that the jackpot has climbed to $415 million.

People have been coming to Neely’s Drive-Thru Grocery in Wheeling all day, hoping for a chance to become a multi-millionaire for an investment of two dollars.

“Sales have been brisk,” said Scott Miller, vice president and manager of Neely’s. “It seems like people still have a little bit of money for gambling. Of course it’s always nice to win a big prize like that. There’s a lot you can do with $415 million.”

“You never know, it’s worth a shot,” said John Malatinski of Wheeling, a customer at Neely’s. “But only if you have the extra money. Don’t go out on a limb.  And just take care of family and friends.”

One person said it would be a fantastic way to start the year, paying off all those Christmas bills.

At Neely’s they say ticket sales have been steady all day.

And they suspect it will heat up tonight, as it gets closer to the time when they draw the winning numbers at 11 p.m.

It’s the 8th largest jackpot in the game’s history.
