New Seeing Hands workshop for the blind and visually impaired

One local organization dedicated to supporting employment opportunities for the blind and visually impaired is now offering a new workshop.

It’s a project that will not only provide more jobs for their workers, but could benefit other local businesses as well.

The Seeing Hand Association for the Blind, located on Main Street in Wheeling, is now filling and selling refurbished fire extinguishers .

They celebrated the opening  with a ribbon cutting early Friday.

All workers were recently trained and state certified for the work.

Exec. Dir Seeing Hand, Karen Haught said, ” I’ve spent five years trying to research projects and I have been to Orlando, Washington, Baltimore, Virginia and finally found this project through National Indstries for the Blind. They started it in Virginia and it’s been a huge home run. So we took a look at it and thought it would be a good fit.”

Employee, Seeing Hand Inc., Bernie Byrum said, ” I love it. I’m retired and have a major vision problem. Macular Degeneration. I like working here. I’ve been here about a year but because of my vision problem. I enjoy working here because I work with other with similar problems. We help each other.”

Right now they are selling ten pound extinguishers for $38.
