WHEELING, W Va. (WTRF) - Each year, remembering Ohio Valley veterans takes on special meaning for the students at Triadelphia Middle School, as students invite family members, who are also veterans, to spend time together at school.
"Being a Desert Storm veteran, it's really nice to see them remember veterans, honor veterans and honor their family," said Sgt. Gust Kepreos, PRO at Triadelphia Middle School.
"Anytime a community, whether it's the middle school, elementary, high school, or an extracurricular, notice veterans or notice service to country, I think that's an amazing thing. I get great pride from it and helps me endure my commitment to service," added SFC Michael Schuster, U.S. Army.
It's all part of the Raider's annual "Lunch with Veterans."
The luncheon is completely student-run by the Raiders Extend A Caring Hand program and REACH club.
Many of the students have their own military connection, but all of them enjoy honoring and spending time with those who serve our country.
"It's really great. This was a month's work of leaving lunch and working so hard. Just to see it all come together, see everyone happy and joying themselves, is really nice to see," said Mya Bagers, an eighth grader at Triadelphia Middle.
On Thursday, students paid tribute to the 25 veterans in attendance by singing the anthems of each of the branches of service, and by reading thank you letters written by students.
"Through being here and seeing the school as a community, and seeing the way people look at this holiday, Veterans Day, it's shed new light for me. I think I have a lot more pride for the day," Schuster said.
Thursday's lunch was served by Applebee's, which has graciously provided the food, free of cost, for nearly a decade.
Applebee's is also offering all veterans a free meal on Saturday in honor of Veteran's Day.
