Tips for working out at the gym during flu season


Many people across the Ohio Valley are taking steps to protect themselves from the flu, which includes not having too much direct contact.

But there are some areas you should be extra careful about when you share equipment, like the gym.

Since we are in the middle of flu season, sometimes you have to stay home if you aren’t feeling well.

In fact, James Youngblood, the wellness director and personal trainer at Wheeling YMCA, says he will send you home if you show up sick.

“Yes, yes I will send them home when I’m personal training anyone, if they are not feeling well. There’s no reason for them to be here honestly. They’re just going to wear themselves down too much.” said James.

James said if your body is trying to fight off an illness by working out, you’re beating your body up and breaking down muscles.

“If you don’t have enough fluids, enough food going into you or have enough energy, you’re going to end up getting sick,” he continued.

There are precautions that you can take when you go to the gym.

Wipe down every piece of equipment that you plan on using before and after.

Also, make sure you wear clean clothes for your workout.

Youngblood says, “If you see something that just doesn’t look right, let the person know that’s working at the back desk. You can even let them know in the front desk. We will handle it right then and there.”

Luke Edgerton, an exerciser, said, “When I come in here, I try to be as clean as possible. If I see someone that’s sick, obviously you don’t want to sick, so you do everything you can to stay away from that.”

A lot of gyms like the YMCA do have outside businesses that come in and clean thoroughly to make sure their gym is sanitized.
