A woman in the East Wheeling playground caught a Wheeling Police officer playing basketball with some local kids on Wednesday evening.
Patrolman First Class Ryan Moore tries to take time out of his busy work shifts to get to know the kids in the neighborhoods he patrols.
PFC Moore says he enjoys doing these things, because the officers may be the only role models or father figures some kids have in their lives.

“So if we can come in here and spend some time with them and show them, ‘Hey, this guy, I know him, he plays basketball with me, he does XY&Z with me, you know, they’re good people.’ Well maybe when they’re getting bullied or having some issues in their neighborhood, they’ll come talk to us so we can solve those problems before they lead to bigger problems,” he said.
Moore and many of his fellow officers believe in this type of ‘community policing.’
