Weirton Heights Rotary Club to host Mardi Gras Gala to raise funds for playground

More developments are coming to Weirton.

This time, they want to revamp the current soccer complex on Colliers Way.

“We’re going to add a playground. We’re going to add a walking trail,” said Daniel Spickard, the former Weirton Heights Rotary president, and a coach for Tri-State United. “We’re going to change the fields so that we can rotate the fields to avoid some of the wear and tear of always playing on a grass field and the same spots get worn down.”

This is a more-than $50,000 project, and so far they have received around $70,000 and they are in the process of implementing the money they received last year.

“What we would like to do within the next two months start all the construction projects we do have. We’ve got a new score board. We’ve got the guard rail going in and hopefully we’ll be having the playground going in here within the next two or three months,” said Tri-State United Soccer Association President Bob Kolanko.

To help with some of the funding for the playground, the Weirton Heights Rotary is hosting a Gala at Williams Country Club on February 23.

The cost of the playground is around $35,000.

“This is actually the 19th year that the Rotary Club’s put on a Mardi Gras event. This year we are going to add games to the fundraiser. Hopefully that will bring more of a turn out,” said Weirton Heights Rotary Club President Tony Viola. “We still have tickets and sponsorships available if anybody around the community is interested.”

This is looking to be around a two and a half year project as long as the weather permits.
