The National Council for Home Safety and Security considers FBI statistics, population data, and other research to come up with a list of safest cities in West Virginia, and the City of Weirton came out on top for 2018.
The City of Weirton is split by two counties and is wedged between two states, and officials say they think their location helps in keeping residents safe.
“Weirton is separated by two counties, so we have two sheriffs, two prosecutors, two sets of magistrates, and we work well and great with all of them,” said Police Chief Rob Alexander.
Alexander says every call is treated with equal importance, and there are always officers patrolling the city.
When it comes to the drug epidemic, Alexander says they have the resources to take it head on.
“We have an FOP contract that says there are to be five guys on the road at all times, so everywhere you go in Weirton, you’re passing a police car. Those are huge. It’s things like that that are a big deterrent for anybody that wants to bring drugs into or through Weirton,” said Alexander.
Aside from policing, Mayor Harold Miller says the number one ranking can also be attributed to the strong sense of community.
“I like to tell visitors that Weirton is the kind of community where if you have an issue with your automobile along the highway, five people stop to help you out. They are always willing to help each other. It’s the constant surveillance of their neighbors and making sure that they are well and taken care of,” said Miller.
Miller says Weirton has seen a lot of positive growth recently, and he is hoping even more in the future.
Also making the top ten is the City of Wheeling which came in at number five.
