On Monday, the sixth K9 officer with the Wheeling Police Department reported for his first day of duty.

K9 Zero comes to the department from Indiana.

He is a three-year-old Belgian Malinois handled by Officer Jason Hupp.

Officer Hupp has been with the department for five years, and says he always wanted to be a K9 handler.

He says K9 Zero’s specialties are in narcotics detection and tracking suspects.

Officer Hupp says he’s nervous and excited to get started, especially with the public.

“Doing demonstrations, going to schools, just getting people involved in understanding how the K9 unit works, as well as cracking down on the drug problem we have in the community,” said Officer Hupp.

K9 Bella on the department is planning to retire either this year or next, and the department will be back to five K9 officers on the road.
