YWCA Wheeling’s 5th annual “Over the Edge” fundraiser continued on Saturday at Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack.
About 50 people who raised at least $1,000 for an individual or $3,500 for a team went rappelling over the side of the hotel.
Dozens more were waiting at the bottom to cheer them on.
The YWCA raises about $50,000 each year through this event to help more than 8,000 men, women, and children in the area through various programs.
“We’ve had so much support from the community sponsoring other people to go over,” said YWCA Executive Director Lori Jones. “It’s been a successful day for the organization.”
“It’s a fabulous thing for the YWCA because it’s raising money for a good cause,” added Over the Edge volunteer Ronald Pickens. “I’m glad to do it.”
“I think anybody that can do anything to help raise money for any type of charity should get up and do it,” said Jeanne Dedo, a clerk at Bordas & Bordas who participated.
The money raised will be unrestricted funds to help the YWCA with what grant funding doesn’t cover like medication for someone, transportation to doctors appointments or items needed for the women’s boutique.
