OSHP investigating crash on Rt. 7 that left two critically injured


BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) – UPDATE 9/26/19 8:30 p.m. – Two people were flown to Pittsburgh hospitals after an accident shut down part of Route 7 early Thursday evening.

According to Sgt. Brian McFarland with the Ohio State Highway Patrol it happened near the intersection with I-470.

McFarland also told 7News the tractor trailer was stopped at a red light, waiting to make a turn onto I-470 when a car, also hoping to make a turn, went through a grass median and struck the trailer.

The car then caught fire.

McFarland said another driver stopped at the scene and pulled the car out from under the trailer, using his truck.

Other tractor trailer drivers in the area put out the fire with fire extinguishers.

The two occupants of the car were taken by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Mercy hospitals in Pittsburgh.

According to McFarland, they both remain in critical condition.

ORIGINAL: Crews are on scene of a terrible accident in Belmont County.

It happened on Route 7 just off of I-470 earlier this evening.

Witnesses say a car was pinned underneath a tractor trailer.

Both directions of Route 7 were closed. Witnesses also told 7News they saw several medical helicopters land on the road.

We are working to get more information from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
