West Virginia coal miners are in Washington this week in an effort protect their pensions.
They want Congress to act to protect the pensions of not only miners, but also more than a million other workers in multi-employer pension plans.
Their benefits may face severe cuts if Congress doesn’t act soon, which is something miners say simply can not happen.
“My pension is not that big,” explained Ohio coal miner Tom Kacsmar. “I went through prostate cancer and a lot of extra expenses, so I can’t handle a cut. We know that the Pension Guaranty Corporation is having financial troubles and they need to fix that but fix our pension problems. It’s very important to us.”
Other miners said that they have done their jobs for decades and now it is time for Congress to do theirs and come up with a solution.
