Cemetery case in Belmont County is still on the “front burner”

Crimes and Courts

The Belmont County Sheriff says the two suspects in the Belmont Memorial Park Cemetery theft case are still under investigation.

Sheriff Dave Lucas says the charges were temporarily dropped due to constraints under the Speedy Trial Act, but he emphasized that those charges “will be pursued.”

He says the caretaker and the secretary/treasurer are being investigated, going back to 2012, for financial irregularities that amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Detective Sgt. Randy Stewart assures people that if they purchased a plot, their deed will be honored.

He says the alleged thefts came to light when people complained about the grass not being mowed or trimmed.

After that, the case was handed over to the sheriff’s department, and investigators discovered the problems lay far deeper than that.

Detective Sgt. Stewart says Ohio BCI now has a forensic accountant on the case, and charges may be filed in the near future.

Stewart is still urging anyone who paid cash for a plot to call him at (740) 695-7933.
