The investigation of the Diocese of Steubenville’s finance office has been completed, according to Bishop Jeffrey Monforton.
“Auditors with Schneider Downs of Pittsburgh are revealing their findings to the Bodman law firm in Detroit, our legal counsel, who are reporting that information to me,” said Bishop Monforton in a press release.
They will be determining if possible criminal activity was involved in the finance office. It will then be decides if any legal action should be taken.
Auditors are consolidating all of the information that has been examined to issue a final report, which will be issued within two weeks.
In February, the bishop announced that potential accounting irregularities were discovered that required an investigation. He then engaged outside legal counsel and an accounting firm with expertise in this area to conduct an investigation.
“We will always respect the intent of the benefactors in the diocese and we will always assist those in the greatest of need,” said Bishop Monforton.
According to the bishop, transparency is critical.
Information will be released as details become available.
