Police: Scammer identifies himself as former Marshall County deputy

scam calls

The Marshall County Sheriffs office says they believable a scam call is targeting residents.

Chief Deputy Helms said the scammer actually identifies himself as Deputy Mercer, who is retired from the department.

He said the call will appear on your caller ID either from the Marshall County Sheriffs office or from police emergency services.

Deputies said the scammer demands money, which is never the department’s protocol.

“It’s very believable as a matter of fact, they’re saying things like you’ve been charged with a misdemeanor, you have outstanding warrants, if the police stop you, you will be placed in jail. Again, they’re working on people’s fear,” said Chief Deputy Bill Helms.

Chief Deputy Helms said he does not think anyone has paid this scammer, but he is not sure how many people have been called.

If you get this call, contact Chief Deputy Helms at 304-843-1500.
