Sheriffs: Deputy hit by a drunk driver three times over the legal limit

According to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol:

On March 29th at 3:30 a.m., on State Route 43 in Jefferson County, Island Creek Township, Deputy Thompson was on patrol south bound on State Route 43 when he encountered a vehicle traveling northbound in the south lane of travel.

Both driver swerved to avoid the other when they collided in the north bound lane.

Deputy Thompson suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by Wintersville EMS to Trinity West Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the other car has been identified as Matthew Marshall, 29, of Toronto, Ohio. Marshall was not injured in the crash. He was arrested for impaired driving and charged with OVI Second Offense and taken to Jefferson County Jail.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol crash reconstruction team is on scene.

Assisting at the crash was Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Wintersville Police, and Wintersville Fire and EMS.


According to the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office Facebook page at 3:30 this morning, Deputy Thompson was struck by an intoxicated driver.

The deputy was on routine patrol on State Route 43 when he was hit.

The sheriffs department says the suspect tested more than three times the legal limit and was not injured.

The deputy was treated for non life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital some time later.
