John Marshall High School freshman Kealyn McCardle will soon be honored at the state capitol after winning the statewide Wonderful West Virginia Mother’s Day Essay Contest.
First Lady Cathy Justice received 280 essays and chose Kealyn’s as the winning entry.
Students were asked to write about women who made a positive impact on their lives.
Kealyn wrote about her mother, some of her teachers, and women in other areas of the world who have overcome unfortunate circumstances to achieve success.
“I was very excited when I found out I won. I do essays like this a lot. I really love to write, so being recognized is really an honor,” said McCardle.
Kealyn will receive a $100 gift card.
She, her parents, and her English teacher Mrs. Mentzer are also invited to attend a reception hosted by the First Lady at the Governor’s Mansion.
