Sea, Air and Land Challenge brings dozens to the Valley

On Friday, more than 100 students, from three schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania came together at Buckeye Local High School with the goal to think on their feet and problem solve using STEM technology.

It was all part of Buckeye Local’s first ever STEM event: the Sea, Air and Land Challenge.

During the day, 14 teams competed using robots and drones they built themselves.

Then, they had the chance to show off their creations in three different challenges.

“Each challenge is basically based off of what the Navy seals do. So, for the sea challenge, there’s six blocks color coded and numbered. There’s also six boxes with the same colors and numbers. Then they have 10 minutes to pick up as many blocks as they can and put them in the boxes,” said Jeff Merrill, STEM Teacher at Buckeye Local High School.

The same rules applied for the land and air challenges.

Officials told 7News the goal of their event was to give students the chance to work together as a team and to think outside the box.

Both are skills in which officials find very important.

“Learning to think on your feet is probably one of the most important attributes we need in today’s society. How to think outside the box. Those important aspects are what Buckeye Local is bringing to the table today. They’re giving kids the opportunity to figure out how to solve complex problems,” said Senator Frank Hoagland (OH).

“STEM isn’t just about math. It’s about getting kids interested in engineering and those type of things. It’s teaching them problem solving skills and things they’re going to use in everyday life for the rest of their lives,” added Merrill.

Merrill said they’ve been working on this project for a few years, so it feels good to finally bring it home.

This year, Quaker Valley High School swept the sea and air events.

Buckeye Local placed first and second in the land event while Beaver Local High School claimed third.
