Update: Westbound Lanes of Route 7 to Reopen by End of Week

UPDATE: 8:30 a.m. 3/13/18

According to ODOT,  the westbound lanes of Route 7 in Chesapeake should be opened by the end of the week.

According to a release from ODOT, contractors continue their efforts to restore state Route 7 in Lawrence County following a rockfall between the U.S. 52 interchange and S.R. 527 at Chesapeake, and the westbound lanes of the route should be open by the end of the week.

S.R. 7 in Lawrence County was closed in the four-lane section between C.R. 15 (Buffalo Creek Road) and C.R. 124 (Tallow Ridge Road) after a massive rock slide occurred along the westbound lanes on Monday, February 26, and forced a full closure of the route.

While eastbound S.R. 7 was reopened to traffic the following day, the route’s westbound lanes have remained closed since.

Expediting efforts to restore the route, ODOT District 9 issued an emergency contract with DGM, Inc. to clear the rock and debris, scale the adjacent hillside to remove additional loose rock and repair the damaged pavement. With the rock removed and scaling completed, the contractors are placing concrete, striping and guardrail this week, and it is anticipated that S.R. 7 West will be open to traffic on Friday, March 16.

The westbound lanes of the route, however, will remain closed until all work has been completed, and while the route is closed, motorists will continue to be detoured by way of either the 31st Street Bridge or the 6th Street Bridge and I-64 in Huntington, West Virginia to the 17th Street Bridge and U.S. 52.

The Ohio Department of Transportation’s Press Secretary says crews in the ODOT Lawrence County garage are working with a contractor to remove the boulders on State Route 7.

After working with contractors, it’s been determined that the westbound lanes of SR-7 could be closed for weeks.

One eastbound lane reopened late Tuesday morning.

All lanes of Route 7 (also considered part of US-52) in Lawrence County are shut down in the Chesapeake area due to a large rock slide.

The slide took place just before 7:30 a.m.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, the rock slide has closed the section of the four-lane area between the 0.0- and the 1.0-mile markers near Chesapeake as a result of the slide.

All lanes are closed near C.R. 124 (Tallow Ridge Road), east of the U.S. 52 interchange and the 6th Street Bridge to West Virginia.

Motorists will be detoured via the 6th and 17th Street bridges in West Virginia.

Another detour, Old US-52, is closed due to flooding near the high school, which will cause further delays.

No injuries are reported.

Crews are on their way to begin clearing the scene.

We will provide more information on this developing story as soon as we receive it.
