The USDA has announced a recall of more than 60 tons of ground beef due to possible E. coli contamination after one person died and others fell sick.

According to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, Cargill Meat Solutions is recalling the ground beef products because of possible E. coli contamination.

This recall relates to a previous one.  On August 30, 2018, Publix Super Markets Inc. voluntarily recalled ground beef products due to a string of illnesses.  Centers for Disease Control researchers traced 17 illnesses and one death due to consuming ground beef purchased at various retail outlets and made further investigations to determine how and where the E. coli bacteria entered the food supply chain.

Investigations revealed a Cargill Meat Solutions plant in Fort Morgan, Colorado, produced the products subject to recall.

The products recalled include:

The recalled products have establishment number “EST. 86R” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

Most people infected with this version of E. coli develop diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Some illnesses last longer and can be more severe, according to the USDA. Most people recover within a week, but rarely, some develop a more severe infection.

The USDA advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160°F.
