A local student is being the recognized at the international level after winning an award at a conference in Orlando, Florida.
Samantha Pearl, a student at West Virginia Northern Community College, received first place in the Extemporaneous Speech Competition for her impromptu speech on the topic, “Should math and science be the main focus in school?”
Samantha becomes the first student from WVNCC win a competition at the international level.
“It was really, really exciting to finally get paid and be recognized for doing something that I love,” said Pearl.
Samantha is set to graduate this month with an Associate’s Degree in Arts and concentration in Psychology. She will then transfer to West Liberty to complete her Bachelor Degree.
Pearl received a $500 scholarship for winning the competition.
