Time is winding down to get that last minute shopping done, so make sure that you are protecting your identity while doing so.
Anybody with a credit or debit card can get their identity stolen whenever it is used to make a purchase.
Thieves can easily steal your identity by hacking into systems, installing card readers on machines or even scanning your credit card while its in your wallet as you walk by. With online shopping becoming more and more popular, that allows thieves more opportunities to steal.
With this being one of the biggest shopping times of the year, you can easily forget those simple steps to make sure your money is stolen.
Rule 1: Make sure you are not shopping on a public WiFi.
“If you’re sitting…somewhere that has that public WiFi, it’s very easy for them to gather data through something like that, so something you have to be very careful of,” said Jason Haswell, the managing director for the Monteverde Group and 7News’s financial expert.
Haswell suggests using a credit monitoring service. Not only do they give you your credit score, they will sometimes alert you if there’s any suspicious activity.
If you notice any suspicious activity on your account, report that to the company or bank immediately and contact your local authorities.
