An Ohio high school game official requires extensive knowledge of a particular sport, attention to detail, and thick skin.
According to a Ohio High School Athletic Association press release, game officials are dropping like flies.
However, the No. 1 reason isn’t due to age or fatigue. A recent survey by the National Association of Sports Officials suggests that 75 percent of all game officials quote parents as the primary reason they quit.
Unsportmanlike conduct from passionate parents are causing young officials to hang up the whistle, OHSAA reports.
Consequently, this is causing a ripple effect throughout the country.
According to OHSAA, many freshmen and junior varsity games are being cancelled due to the shortage of referees.
