Despite post on Facebook, ethane cracker construction has not begun

Ohio Headlines

Anticipation for the ethane cracker in Belmont County is reaching new heights, and with anticipation comes a busy time for the rumor mill.

Recently, a Facebook post made by a Beaver County, Pennsylvania commissioner stated that a decision on the plant will be made by late March, and that “remediation construction” had begun — but that information was based on a trade publication written two years ago.

Dan Williamson, a spokesperson for PTT Global, says that projects of this magnitude generate a lot of excitement, so people tend to make statements out of hope rather than fact.

“They guess or predict when something might happen, and I think that’s normal,” Williamson said. “I think it’s a reflection of a lot of the positive energy around the project.”

Williamson emphasized that the decision has not yet been made, so the announcement can’t be placed on the calendar — but that doesn’t mean that the announcement won’t happen in March. If it does, however, that would be purely coincidental.
