Stephen Smith files bid for 2020 West Virginia governor’s race

Politics

The 2020 gubernatorial election in West Virginia is just under two years away, and one candidate has already announced his bid for the state’s highest office.

First time candidate, 38-year-old Stephen Smith of Charleston has filed to run for office. He currently serves as the Director of the West Virginia Healthy Kids and Families Coalition.

While Smith is a registered Democrat, he believes that both parties need to start working for West Virginians.

“The biggest problem in our state is that it isn’t owned and operated for the people of West Virginia. For the last 30 or 40 years, Democrats and Republicans far too often have agreed that the thing we need to do is try to woo multi-national corporation, that then come here and undercut local business and drive wages down. And that doesn’t work for anybody except those businesses,” Smith said.
