One in custody after standoff with man barricaded in home

West Virginia Headlines

Law enforcement was on the scene where a man had barricaded himself inside a home in Valley Grove on Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff Tom Howard said that this incident started as report of a domestic dispute and deputies believe they heard a gunshot.

The Sheriff’s Department (including the department’s Special Response Team), Triadelphia Police and West Virginia State Police all responded.

Authorities said they negotiated with the man for more than two hours, trying to get him to come out.

“We tried negotiating for over two hours and then up to the point where he would not listen to us,” Chief Deputy John Schultz said, “so we made our decision to have our STR team make entry into the residence.”

Sheriff Howard said one person is in custody.

The Sheriff’s Department also said one else was in the home, and they are not releasing the man’s name at this time.

National Road was closed in the area until just before 3:00 p.m. and Chief Deputy Schultz said the area “was secure and no one was in any possible danger.”
