Semi accident along Route 88 causes damage, closes Bethany Pike Carwash

West Virginia Headlines

City officials say the accident happened around 11a.m. Friday morning.

A semi truck flipped over along Route 88 Southbound near the bottom Country Club Hill.

The truck was hauling about 70 thousand tons worth of plastic coloring material, went around a sharp turn and flipped over on its side.

“It hit a utility pole, a gas meter, as well as clipping the carwash as well,” said Philip Stahl, PIO for the Wheeling Police Department.

The accident shut down parts of Route 88 and Warden Run Road while crews brought in heavy equipment to clean up the damage.

There was some damage to the Bethany Pike Car Wash.
Nothing structural, but representatives there say the truck knocked over a utility pole servicing them.
Now, they’re without power, heat and water.

“The car wash is down. We will definitely be down for a little while. We have no gas, no electric. So, we’re in the process right now of winterizing the building. Hopefully within the next month or so, we’ll be back up and running,” said Bob Heldrath, Manager, Bethany Pike Car Wash.

Officials say there weren’t many cars on the road at the time so traffic wasn’t too bad.

Drivers traveling Route 88 Northbound were re-routed onto GC&P Road.

Southbound travelers, were forced to turn back around and go the other way.
There was some concern for Oglebay Festival of Lights traffic but crews worked quickly to relinquish some of that concern.
The driver of that truck walked away with no injuries.
Nobody was inside of the carwash at the time and they’re looking to be back open within the next month.
