Firefighters in Weirton are going to start seeing more money on their paychecks, and that’s all thanks to the Weirton city council passing the ordinance Monday night at their regular meeting.

All 22 of the Weirton Firefighters’ Association Local Number 948 will be seeing a 5 percent increase in their salaries.

Lieutenant Jim Brueck for the Weirton Fire Department says this has been a long process in the making since November of last year. City manager Travis Blosser signed a new contract with their union to make these changes happen. Brueck and his fellow firefighters are excited that this is finally done and that this is a big step for the future of the fire department. “We’re looking for somethings and we kind of middle here in the middle and now at the end. We’re excited to at least have this behind us and get our members what they need.”

There were other changes made to the contract. Adjustments were made regarding sick pay and overtime rates, and they are also going to be seeing an increase for their holiday compensation.
