A Wheeling Central Catholic High School student has received an Offer of Appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy by U.S. Senator Joe Manchin.
According to a press release, Senator Manchin announced that WCCHS senior Jack Stryker received the offer on Monday.
When asked why he wanted to attend a service academy, Jack reportedly said he wants to “attend the Naval Academy because I enjoy serving others and challenging myself.”
According to the release, Jack wants to become a Submarine Officer upon graduation.
Each year, Senator Manchin nominates up to 10 students to each of the nation’s service academies requiring congressional recommendations, including the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, the Military Academy at West Point, and the Merchant Marine Academy.
Students are nominated after Senator Manchin reviews the recommendations made by a seven-member Service Academy Selection Board. The Board is made up of West Virginians who have served in the military or who are educators.
The Board interview process ensures that the candidate meets the needed qualifiactions and criteria.
