If you’re feeling lucky this weekend, Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack is officially opening for sports betting on college and pro sports.
The casino officially started taking bets on Thursday afternoon as part of a “soft opening”, but starting on Friday sports betting will officially be open to the public.
Many people tell me they couldn’t be more excited.
This has been a long time coming for our area. 7News spoke with Delegate Shawn Fluharty (D – Ohio County) who said he first introduced a sports betting bill two years ago.
Now that it’s a reality, Del. Fluharty believes sports betting will draw new people to the area, spending time at not only the casino, but local bars and restaurants too.
“I think it’s exciting,” said Del. Fluharty . “We’re now two years in the making since I first introduced this legislation. It will be a nice shot in the arm for the Northern Panhanle in particular, especially since Ohio does not have sports betting and Pennsylvania just started there’s up. I’m hoping it brings a lot of traffic here and brings a lot of people to the Northern Panhandle. That’s always a good thing.”
A ribbon cutting ceremony is set for Friday morning and you can see the latest details live on 7News at Noon.
