WTRF recognizes six High School Heisman Scholarship finalists from the area

News

The Heisman Trophy is recognizable to many college football fans. However, very few are familiar with the Heisman Scholarship that is presented to the best high school seniors on and off the field.

And six state finalists reside in the Ohio Valley area.

Created by Wendy’s in 1994, this scholarship has honored over 600,000 high school seniors.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must maintain a 3.0 GPA and participate in at least one school sponsored sport.

Winners are chosen by a committee once the student-athlete submits several essays.

Here are the six finalists:

  • Lydia Knutsen, John Marshall High School
  • Charles McCool, John Marshall High School
  • DeAnna Crumm, Wheeling Park High School
  • Emily Donley, Brooke High School
  • Chad Durante, Weirton Madonna High School
  • Kenadee Wayt, Central Catholic High School

Several students expressed their gratitude to the key influencers that have helped them achieve their dreams along the way.

“Obviously this recognition isn’t just me,” said Knutsen. “I would like to thank all my coaches and parents and helping me achieve everything that I have.”

“I’d just like to thank coaches, parents, and especially teammates for pushing me to do my best everyday in practice or in the classroom,” said McCool.

7News congratulates all area-state finalists on a great achievement.
