WVSSAC Academic Achievement Awards 2018

The Super Six Championships are all about the way athletes perform on the field BUT the WVSSAC Academic Achievement Awards are all about how students handle business in the classroom.

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Academic Achievement Awards didn’t skip a beat as the ceremony happened bright and early Saturday Morning.

This, all happening inside the ballroom of the Wheeling Island Casino.

Here’s how they’re selected, the state-wide awards are split into two categories one for individual students and another for sports and band teams based on their computed overall GPA.

“They have a written application, they have to submit that to the board and then they go through those applications and it is difficult to choose especially the individual winners,” said Chris Carter, Chairperson, SSAC Awards.

Students representing schools from Ohio and Marshall Counties all the way to Crawly County and Harrison County South of here were recognized.

It’s something students work hard all year for. Abby Jones, is a senior from Wheeling Park High School and won the Female Athlete Award. She plays basketball and tennis and has a flair for science.
She’s grateful for her support system.

“I have a lot of support from my parents and my team mates and my coaches and teachers so definitely all of them,” said Jones.

Vance Mazure is another Senior from Wheeling Park and winner of the Male Band Student Award.
He’s happy he’s being awarded for his passion, and is paying forward.

“Understand the world you live in and don’t make excuses because everybody has some kind of adversity they’re dealing with and if you make excuses then you’re not going to be able to get the job done,” said Mazure.
