The annual Cancer Research Classic is moving to a new location this year: WesBanco Arena.
The CRC has been held at Wheeling Jesuit University for the past 11 years, but CRC Director Dr. Gregory Merrick said that the event has “simply outgrown” that location.
Merrick said that the move “makes sense on many levels.”
“Holding the event at the WesBanco Arena will accommodate more fans, alleviate parking concerns, provide shorter waits at the concession stands and streamline ticket sales,” said Merrick.
The 2019 CRC is scheduled for January 4th and 5th.
The two day event is attended by 8,000 to 10,000 people each year, and attracts fans from 17 states and Canada.
According to Frank O’Brien, director of the Wheeling-Ohio County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the 2018 CRC provided a $1.5 million boost to Ohio County.
“Bringing this downtown is going to be a nice complement to our ongoing efforts to revitalize the downtown, especially around the waterfront,” Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott said in a press release.
The CRC showcases the best in high school basketball, many of whom have gone on to play in the NBA.
All games will be broadcast on one of the ESPN networks.
Proceeds of the CRC support Wheeling Hospital’s men’s health programs and undergraduate cancer research.
