Fans of classic rock may want to check out the Brooke High School Bruin Marching Band this season.
The band has been working for months to put on a show the crowd will love, featuring the music of Elton John.
“Whenever we perform we mean business,” said junior Co-Captain of the drum line Matthew Kolb.
They may be serious on the field, but don’t be fooled, the Brooke High School Bruin Marching Band is enjoying every minute rocking out to to the Rocketman himself.
“We hit the ground running in June with the show and I wasn’t sure how they’d take to it. It’s classic rock,” said Brooke High School Director of Bands Johnny Leonard “It’s not really their generation’s music, but the thing about Elton John music is it’s timeless.”
The show includes hits like “Funeral for a Friend”, “Your Song”, and “Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting”.
“I like all of them, but I think my favorite is ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ because I get to do a really cool swords routing and I’m surrounded by like the band,’ said senior Feature Twirler Lilli DelGuzzi.
The drum solo is also a favorite for some band members.
“It’s at a really high tempo, so that’s really exciting,” said junior Co-Captain of the drum line Johan Eggert. “There’s just a lot of cool bits. There’s a cymbal feature in the beginning.”
The around 80 members of Pride of Brooke County are a close-knit and diverse bunch, who participate in a variety of other activities too.
“They bring those experiences they have with those clubs and those sports back here and that work ethic and it creates a really unique atmosphere within the bands,” Leonard added.
The hours spent at band might be their favorite.
“Finally getting something right in timing or with the whole guard it just feels great,” said senior Co-Captain of the color guard Hailey Beadle. “After all the work because we work all the way from like June.”
It’s given some of them a love of music.
“At first I didn’t really like have an interest in music, but the second I got there it just opened a world up for me and it was amazing,” Kolb explained.
The passion for music has helped the group create a show the crowd will love.
“They should absolutely expect a lot of fun, a lot of great attitudes and just they should expect to be entertained,” Leonard said.
Congratulations to the Brooke High School Bruin Marching Band, this week’s C.A. House Music Band of the Week.
You can catch the band at the next home football game, which is next Friday, September 14 when the Bruins take on Morgantown at 7:30 p.m.
