The Pittsburgh Pirates hope to get a look at their future on Wednesday when they send celebrated prospect Roansy Contreras to the mound to make his major league debut.

The Pirates (59-98) are expected to promote Contreras from Triple-A Indianapolis before the game against the visiting Chicago Cubs (67-90).

“We’re getting to take a look at one of our prospects — one of our top prospects,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said of the right-handed Contreras, the organization’s No. 6 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. “I think we temper all excitement, just like we do with any situation, but it’s just a credit to our development group as we continue to move guys forward.”

Contreras, 21, posted a 3-2 record with a 2.64 ERA while pitching for Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He notched 82 strikeouts in 58 innings.

Colin Moran homered and drove in four runs as the Pirates recorded an 8-6 victory in the series opener on Tuesday. Moran is batting a robust .349 (15-for-43) with three homers, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored against Chicago this season.

Bryan Reynolds collected three hits and three runs scored on Tuesday to send the reeling Cubs to their seventh straight loss.

Speaking of the number seven, Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendricks (14-7, 4.81 ERA) hopes the seventh time is the charm Wednesday when he vies for his 15th victory of the season.

Hendricks, 31, fell to 0-2 in his last six starts last Wednesday after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits — including two homers by Max Kepler — in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-4 setback to Minnesota.

Hendricks said he has done his best to stay focused even though the Cubs’ season went off the rails.

“You try and go out there with the same mindset every time and it’s just one pitch at a time,” Hendricks said. “Execute one pitch, move on to the next one, execute that one.

“So, when everything’s going good, that’s where I’m at. But for me, it just hasn’t been locked in lately, so we’ve just kind of made a switch to go in with one or two goals I’m really trying to accomplish and go from there.

“Make sure I do it and make myself better and set myself up for next year.”

Hendricks owns a 7-10 record with a 3.69 ERA in 23 career starts vs. Pittsburgh, including a 1-2 mark with a 7.45 ERA in four appearances this season.

Nick Martini recorded four hits on Tuesday after totaling that same number in his previous 10 games this month.

Frank Schwindel had a pair of singles in the series opener to post his 23rd multi-hit performance since joining the Cubs on July 30. His RBI single in the third inning ignited a three-run uprising, while his next hit helped start another three-run effort in the fifth.

“I mean, I take guys for face value,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “If you rake, you rake, right? He can hit.”
