The Senate passed Senate Bill 77 this week, sponsored by Senators Frank Hoagland (R-Mingo Junction) and Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland), which will designate June 12 as “Women Veterans’ Day.”

On June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as permanent members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

“In commemoration of the anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, it is only fitting that we recognize the accomplishments of all women veterans across the State of Ohio,” said Hoagland.
As of 2017, women made up approximately 15 percent of all active-duty military personnel.

Senate Bill 77 will now be sent to the Ohio House for further consideration.
