CA House Band of the Week: Harrison Central Huskies

This week’s CA House Band of the Week: the Harrison Central Huskies Marching Band.

Band Director Angela Ripley said the halftime show is based around Lady GaGa.

“We call it Gaga-palooza,” she explained. “The songs are ‘Born This Way’, ‘Bad Romance’, ‘Americano’, and ‘Pokerface’.”

Harrison Central is one of the largest bands in the Ohio Valley with 66 students this year ranging from eighth to 12th graders, including 10 color guard members.

Ripley works with her Assistant Band Director Eric Zalenski to lead the band.

“Both of us work with the seventh grade band, so with six years of impact we really get to know the kids,” Ripley said. “It’s a family atmosphere here and we really get to do some really neat things with them musically.”

“Getting to watch these kids go through their musicianship and through their citizenship is just an absolutely amazing opportunity,” Zalenski added.

Mia Lewis is this year’s field commander. She’s been a part of the band for five years and she’s happy to take on this leadership role.

“When I’m conducting sometimes and they do their songs and it sounds good, I feel very happy,” she added.

With only seven seniors this year, the section leaders have the big task of being a mentor to the underclassmen, but they say it’s all worth it.

Senior Piccolo Jennifer Forrester says, “Being an upperclassman seeing all the newer numbers coming up, you get to help them and watch them grow as they go through the years,” said senior piccolo player Jennifer Forrester.

“I just love sharing knowledge with other people,” continued drumline captain Marcellus Jones. “I’m glad to see that it helps them out.”

But most of all, it’s more than band, it’s a family.

“To be a family, you have to basically accept everyone and tell them ‘hey it’ll be okay’,” said senior trumpet player Kylie Hyre. “You’ll make it. It’s not that hard now. It’ll get easier.'”

“We especially come together when we’re playing something because we bond so well, just like with the music,” Jones added.

The Huskies Marching Band will be performing their halftime show Friday October 12 at Oak Glen High School after the game is over.
