7NEWS caught up with some shoppers who were out stretching their legs from quarantine and on a treasure hunt to find out what exactly is open at The Highlands and what remains locked.

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — The Highlands is slowly starting to reopen but as of this sunny Memorial Day weekend, some big name stores still remain closed.

Retail in West Virginia has been allowed to open back up following Governor Jim Justice’s orders. Since Thursday, May 21st, some big name brands have reopened with Kohl’s opening Friday and now Sunday, Bath and Body Works having a line down the sidewalk; admitting eight customers at a time.

This reopening process has brought many out to see just exact what businesses have come back to life.

We’re from Pennsylvania, and we just had to get away to go where something is open.

Roger, Highlands shopper

T.J. Maxx’s ‘reopening soon’ sign is the only hint on the door, plugging to sign-up for an email to be the first to know once the store does have a set time. But this doesn’t help shoppers who are already at the highlands, parking their cars, walking to the doors, to only find out that it’s locked.

Bath and Body Works, we got on a list to eat dinner at Cheddar’s, and we were hoping to go to T.J. Maxx, but as you can see, they’re closed.

And other big names have not given much more, with some Highlands goers holding out on reopening as a chance to find some bling for a big occasion.

Probably JCPenny’s. We had it for May 9th, we had to move it to June 6th, and now we moved it again to July 18th, so, we’re hoping we can have our wedding.

What seems like a 2-month anticipation to get your hands on sanitizer, cars filled the lot.

Yeah, they’re taking the precautions. I mean, there’s Xs on the floor and they’re letting everybody in; if somebody comes out, somebody goes in. The mask is optional, but it just depends on where I’m going in. It’s just nice to have everything coming back open again. Normal…Somewhat normal.

Barbara, Bath & Body Works shopper

It’s that new normalcy that shoppers are adjusting to.

I found that we will still put our mask on in the store, just to be cool. You know, just kind of respect the other people around you and things like that. But I think as long as we all work together, we’ll be fine.

It’s a little hot, but it’s not terrible to wear.

Now, some big names at The Highlands, like T.J. Maxx and J.C. Penny still don’t have reopening times posted. But 7NEWS will be keeping an eye out for you. For more info on stores that are opened, head here.
