CANTON, Ohio (AP) — A former Ohio doctor accused of prescribing opioids and other drugs without a legitimate purpose has been sentenced to 113 years in prison.

Forty-one-year-old Frank Lazzerini, of Barberton , must serve at least 56 years before being eligible for parole.

A jury found Lazzerini guilty in June of more than 100 charges including involuntary manslaughter, aggravated drug trafficking and Medicaid fraud. He was acquitted of 76 counts.

Stark County Common Pleas Judge Kristin Farmer handed down the sentence Friday. Prosecutors had urged her to show no leniency and to put Lazzerini behind bars for the rest of his life.

Law enforcement agencies raided Lazzerini’s Premier Family Practice in Jackson Township in February 2016. The former family doctor then surrendered his medical license, filed for bankruptcy and was arrested in 2018.
